Work Jobs Completed Spring 2009

 

May 1 – 9, Camp Farwesta, Stewartsville, MO.

Twenty-four RVA members from five states, & six local representatives volunteered 1304 hours.  Fifteen cabins: installed new windows & doors, screen doors, new metal roofs, insulation in walls, drop ceilings, 4 x 8 sheets of particle board, textured & painted interior walls, and painted exterior walls.  Kitchen: installed 3 AC ducts; Camp Manager’s Home: installed new front & back doors.

 

 

May 11 – 16, Liberty Hall, Lamoni, Iowa.

Sixteen RVA members from five states, and one local person volunteered 308 hours.   Liberty Hall: dug trench between porch & sidewalk, mixed concrete, and installed guard

around the porch to keep animals out from under

porch.  East house: repaired siding & window sills, cleaned out gutters, cut & installed trim boards, built cover for coal chute, repaired door, removed & buried two dead animals from under house, scraped & painted exterior.  West House: removed & replaced soffit & cleaned gutters.  School House: Scraped & painted entrance, painted new boards below roof.  Outside restrooms: painted & cleaned interior & removed & replaced hardware.

 

May 18 – 24, Camp Nauvoo, Nauvoo, Illinois.

Twenty-one members from six states volunteered 582 hours.  Ourth Hall: replaced rotten sill plate on west wall, replaced wall studs on lower two feet, as needed, removed existing concrete & poured 12’ square of concrete by canteen serving window.  Cabins 1 & 2: removed chip board on lower two feet of interior, removed 2 feet of insulation, installed chip board back onto the walls, covered all walls w/sheet rock, trimmed out all windows & doors & graded around cabin for improved drainage away from building.  Cabin 5: cut hole in wall & installed new AC & heating unit. Cabin 17: installed new AC & heating unit. Nursery: reinforced fence, where needed, and removed old slide, filling holes w/dirt.

 

May 25 – 30, Joseph Smith Hist. Sites, Nauvoo.  Twenty-five members from six states volunteered 695 hours. Joseph Smith Homestead: repaired brick walk where sinking had occurred.  Mansion House: Rebuilt & painted all storm windows.  Red Brick Store: replaced two window sills on north side of second floor, repaired gap under cellar door, painted cellar door & hinges, installed stone on face of concrete ramp.  Rigdon House: rebuilt storm windows & window sills, as needed;

scraped & painted entire exterior of building

 

 

repaired front porch & painted all exterior; rebuilt stone end caps on culvert under driveway.  First Hotel: painted five cellar windows & doors around foundation.  Aaron Johnson House: painted cellar door.  William Marks House: painted cellar door & installed new door sill on back door.  Wright House: painted cellar door & painted front porch.

 

June 1 – 12, Camp Manitou, Cassopolis, MI.

Eighteen members from three states & four local people worked 855 hours.  Women’s Restroom in cabin area: removed old shower partitions; removed old lavatories & plumbing; installed four inch concrete block walls for new showers; installed new countertops & 5 new lavatories w/all new plumbing; removed 2 exterior doors; widened openings to receive 36” doors opening outward, w/new trim; painted total restroom, except for shower areas; installed toilet paper dispensers; scraped & cleaned floors.  Men’s Restroom in cabin area: lowered the sinks & countertops.  Cabin now used as chapel: removed 2 doors & 2 windows; installed new doors & new windows; trimmed new doors & windows on the interior; installed new siding on all four sides; caulked siding, making it ready to paint; installed 8’x 8’ deck on rear of building; installed handicap accessible ramp on front deck.  Open pavilion: Installed stage area 10’ x 16’ w/steps on each end; sanded, primed & painted 140 chairs for building; installed new privacy fence east of building.  Screened porch: installed chip board & trim around base of room; cleaned & painted floor.  Health Center: cleaned interior; caulked & painted bathroom door trim; washed/ironed curtains.  New Lodge: installed rail fence west of building;  installed 16’x 24’ deck on east side of building installed new washer & dryer; assembled 7 new fans; moved desks & armoires into rooms.  New privacy wall for trash bins: installed concrete forms for new concrete block wall around area; installed most of the concrete block for the walls.  Cabins: repaired foundation, pending building inspector approval & codes; installed new shutters on several cabins; cleaned interior of each cabin; washed/ironed curtains. Miscellaneous:  cleaned up work sites; painted floor of Sr. High Cabin; painted Water Front cabin & installed shelving; hung pictures, bulletin boards & shelving.   

 

July 13 – 28, Outreach International, Indep, MO.  Eight RVA members from three states, & twenty-six local people volunteered 1056 hours  remodeling the OI offices on the square in Indep.  Second & third floors, & hallways: Removed all carpeting; cleaned floors; cleaned all walls covered with vinyl wall paper; painted all offices & hallways; built new walls to create new office areas, including a place for a refrigerator;  replaced counter in kitchen area; sheet rocked walls; installed electrical outlets where needed; removed all heating & air conditioning registers, cleaning them & reinstalling them; removed all formica from window sills; caulked around windows to try to prevent water leakage; and moved furniture.  One office on third floor:

Removed ceiling tile; installed new drop ceiling; repaired walls, as needed; installed new electrical receptacles, phone wire & computer cables, re-hung old light fixtures; textured all walls & repainted them.

 

WORK JOBS COMPLETED FALL 2009

 

September 21–October 2, Camp Powder Fork, Bald Knob, AR.  Eleven RVA members from 4 states, and five local representatives volunteered 745 hours.  Girls cabins 1-5 & Boys Cabins 1-5: removed old wood trim from all cabins; installed Hardy Board trim on corners, windows & doors; installed new Hardy Board lap siding on all cabins; caulked all cabins making them ready for paint; covered all windows & doors w/ paper; painted all ten cabins; painted a darker color trim on all ten cabins.  Girls cabin s 1-4, removed old shingles from roof; installed new plywood sheeting as needed, installed metal edging and new shingles.

 

October 4 – 10, Brush Creek Campground, Xenia, IL, Twenty-five RVA Members from 5 states, and 29 local participants volunteered 1152 hours.  Projects: Lodges 1 & 2: broke out side- walk to find 4” drain lines; dug trench to receive 8” & 10” drainage pipe w/ four catch basins; covered up pipe; set forms in 5 different areas; poured & finished 2.5 yards of concrete.  Lodge #1: Replaced all toilet stools; installed 10’ drain

in men’s shower; installed some foam rope filler & sealer around bottom of siding.  Landscaping: West of dining hall, considerable landscaping was done in two separate locations.  Shower House by Pool: Changed out all toilet stools in men’s & women’s restrooms.  Dock at Lake: Stained flooring & hand rails of complete dock.  Fountain in lake: Installed conduit, wire & receptacle on pole for future fountain in lake.  Well House: Removed old roof; replaced rotten boards; installed new roofing; painted entire building; removed & replaced small box connected to well house which we filled w/ insulation to keep water pipes from freezing.  West Shower House: started work on complete make-over, which is being done by the Marion Congregation.  Auditorium: replaced brick molding around 4 doors.  Duplex cabin: installed 8 new windows, 2 new doors & 2 openings for air conditioners.  Log Cabin across road from church: cleared grove behind cabin of shrubbery & some trees.  Kitchen & Dining Hall: Planned menus; shopped for groceries; prepared meals & cleaned-up; washed, dried & folded kitchen laundry; installed 2 new lights in walk-in cooler; repaired leaking drain on dishwasher in kitchen; installed electricity to beverage serving counter; extended top by 8” to catch basin on east side of dining room, so excavation can be finished. Miscellaneous: installed outside water faucet by kitchen to use for watering gardens; cut dead trees & trimmed around campground; stained 15 picnic tables; painted bench in cemetery.

 

October 11 – 24, Camp Woodland Hills, St. Clair, MO.   Nineteen RVA members from Ontario & four states, and 3 local participants volunteered 816 hours.  Projects:  RV Sites: made additions to the walls of 2 RV sites w/ decorative landscaping block to improve water drainage around sites; removed old RR ties on 2 existing sites, & replaced them w/ decorative landscaping block; replaced & repaired some water faucets & shut-offs, scattered rock on all sites.  Men’s & Women’s Bath Houses: Replaced faucets, as needed; replaced sheet rock, as needed, & repainted most of interiors w/ epoxy paint; replaced water shut-off valve & drain valves; cleaned areas before painting; installed 2 new exterior doors & painted them. Shuffle Board Court: Extended height of existing walls & added a capstone; installed gravel rock behind wall for improvement.  Lodge: Installed handicap accessible faucet in each of men’s & women’s restrooms.  Kitchen: prepared & cleaned up after evening meals; sharpened knives; made plumbing & table repairs; replaced electrical outlet.  Cabin by Pool:  Removed logs, as needed, replacing them w/ new ones; painted new logs & exterior of front door & window; installed new guttering on one side of building; installed new downspout for new guttering. Half-Way House: Installed new window sills, as needed; painted windows; installed Hardy Board on back of rear wall in main room & painted exterior; installed new guttering w/ leaf guards & downspout on one end of building; installed missing downspouts on front & rear of building.  Caretaker’s House: Did considerable carpentry work on different areas of building, as needed, making house ready to receive paint; installed new lumber for threshold of exterior French doors; Power washed exterior in preparation for painting.  Miscellaneous:  Scattered rock on roads around camp & graded where needed; installed water shut-off valves w/ extended turn-off handles throughout camp; installed lattice work on gazebos.
